Come and learn how to design vehicles.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

During these 2 weeks of intensive training with John Frye, you will learn the basics of vehicle design (whether for the automotive industry or for film, comics, etc.).
You’ll study different types of vehicles, past and present, and imagine the vehicles of the future, special vessels, etc.
Topics such as form, surfaces, balance, proportions and material rendering will be covered. The course will be punctuated by theory, demonstrations and practical exercises.

PRE-REQUISITE

Have a solid foundation in drawing.

REQUESTED MATERIAL

* Marker paper pad approximately A3 size (29.7 x 42.0cm, 11.69 x 16.53 inches)
* Tracing paper pad approximately A3 size (29.7 x 42.0cm, 11.69 x 16.53 inches)
* Copic or similar broad/chisel tip warm or neutral grey markers several very light values #1-#3 or 10%-30% and black
* 1 dozen black soft colored pencils (Prismacolor or similar) NOT Verithin (too hard)
* Pencil sharpener
* Straightedge around 12″ or 300mm long minimum
* White paint marker (test for good opacity)

THE TEACHER

John Frye est un modélisateur et illustrateur spécialisé dans le dessin de véhicules.
Après avoir terminé des études au Art Center College of Design de Pasadena, spécialité design automobile, il travaille comme freelance en tant qu’illustrateur et designer.
Il travaille aujourd’hui comme designer principal chez Honda et donne également des cours depuis plusieurs années à la Concept Design Academy de Pasadena en Californie.
Il donne des cours chez Beaux-Arts & Entertainment depuis 2022.

Monday, November 03rd

Day - 1
Purpose, person, power, propulsion - the essential fundamentals of vehicle design. Literal to abstract spectrum. Understand your position on the L to A spectrum to develop a project-appropriate design.

Tuesday, November 04th

Day - 2
Military vehicles. Box cutting and carving. Logic and construction, making military and utility vehicles. Creating interest with proportional and mass adjustments. Military patterns and kitbashing for science fiction Makoto Kobayashi and Kow Yokoyama.

Wednesday, November 05th

Day - 3
World War I-era airplane. Fabric, canvas, wood and wire. Visual understanding of light structural engineering with tensile and compression components. Miyazaki “Porco Rosso”. Alex Alice.

Thursday, November 06th

Day - 4
World War II aircraft. Aluminum-alloy body, wind-tunnel-optimized shapes. Various design options. Wing shape, rudder arrangement, wing material, engine type, weight balance.

Friday, November 07th

Day - 5
Cars and trucks from the early 1900s. Car body + engine box, working with different styles and pushing proportions for comedy and drama. Eric Guillon, John Bell, Jidehém.

Monday, November 10th

Day - 6
Volumetric boxcars from the 1930s to the early 1950s. Art Deco trains. Bruce McCall's comical extremism. Hovercars and hovertrains: Burdisio's Fifth Element.

Tuesday, November 11th

Day - 7
American Muscle. Engine detail, powerful rear drive - expressive proportion.

Wednesday, November 12th

Day - 8
Cars of the future. Imagining the future away from the wheel and interior design of contemporary vehicles.

Thursday, November 13th

Day - 9
Jet planes and using the abstraction of jet planes to create spacecraft.

Friday, November 14th

Day - 10
The world of Star Wars land and space vehicles.
