WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this intensive workshop with Pernille Ørum, participants will learn how to create appealing characters for animation (or the like)

THE TEACHER

Pernille Ørum is a danish illustrator and character designer living as a freelancer in Nairobi, Kenya.
She graduated The Animation Workshop in 2011 with a bachelor degree in Character Animation and went on to both Ireland and UK to work as an animator before deciding to move back to Denmark and focus on character design.

Pernille has worked with companies such as Hasbro, Nickledeon Jr, Mattel, Dreamworks, Disney publishing and Penguin Goldenbooks and she was the lead character designer on Warner Brother’s ‘DC Superhero Girls’.
In 2019 Pernille had her debut as a comic book artist with Mark Miller’s HitGirl written by the movie director Kevin Smith.

Morning -
Lecture: what makes an appealing character?How to get inspired?

Demonstration: start working on a character.

Exercise: based on the given information, begin creating your own characters (not a previously created character)
Afternoon -
Lecture: Giving your character personality + acting.

Demonstration: Showing how to make expressions and pose your character.

Exercise: Putting the character in different poses.

Sunday, May 19th

Morning -
Lecture: understanding color and how they can define your character.
-
Demonstration: find reference for great use of color - make thumbnails.
-
Exercise: Based on the theory and reference. Create color thumbnails for your characters.
Afternoon -
Lecture: How to finalise your drawing.

Demonstration: Create a final drawing.
-
Exercise: Complete character + how to present them.
